Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Q & A

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an outpatient procedure where you sit in a pressurized chamber filled with pure oxygen. The air pressure inside the chamber is 2-3 times higher than normal, enabling your lungs to inhale more oxygen.

Increased oxygen levels speed up your body’s healing process and eliminate potentially harmful bacteria. The treatment also promotes the release of growth factors and stem cells –– enhancing your recovery.

What types of issues can hyperbaric oxygen therapy treat?

Dr. Jervis uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat various foot and ankles issues, including:

  • Chronic diabetic foot wounds
  • Compromised skin grafts
  • Bone infection (osteomyelitis)
  • Crush injuries
  • Radiation cystitis
  • Radiation proctitis

Sometimes, Dr. Jervis prescribes hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help manage the effects of radiation treatment, such as osteoradionecrosis (bone death).

How do I prepare for hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Before hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you change out of your regular clothes and into a hospital gown. Make sure to leave anything that generates heat or is battery-powered, like lighters or cell phones, at home. You should also avoid using any hair or skin products that contain petroleum or other potentially flammable products.

What does hyperbaric oxygen therapy involve?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy occurs inside a sealed plastic chamber.

Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Jervis seals the unit and turns it on. The air pressure inside the chamber increases until it’s 2-3 times higher than normal. During this time, it’s normal to feel your ears popping (like they might on an airplane). You can relieve any discomfort by yawning or swallowing.

You sit in the chamber for 2-3 hours. During that time, you can take a nap or simply relax. At the end of your session, Dr. Jervis removes you from the chamber, takes you to a recovery room, and monitors your vital signs.

After about half an hour, you can change back into your clothes and return to your normal routine.

Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy present any side effects?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is safe and usually well tolerated. You may feel tired or hungry after the procedure, but you don’t need to limit your activities. After treatment, you can return to work and exercise right away.
